Bayer 04 Leverkusen, also known by Bayer Leverkusen or simply Bayer is a German Football Club. They play in Bundesliga, the top tier of the Germany.
The club was founded by Bayer, one of the largest pharmaceutical and Life Sciences company in 1904. Now that we know about their formation, let’s figure out their logo.
What does Bayer Leverkusen logo signify?
Well figuring it out isn’t that difficult as was the case with AS Roma, that I did last week. There are 2 red lions with glorious manes around their neck on either side. Possibly twin lions too? Well, is there any actual significance? The answer is ‘Yes, it does.’ A very important one indeed which resperesents ‘Coat of Arms.’
Historically speaking, a coat of arms is a design on the shield of a medieval knight. The design was unique to an individual and subsequently to his family. Sometimes, the individual only had rights to the coat of arms during his lifetime. Gradually, he was allowed to pass it down to his descendants, and it became the family coat of arms. As time went on, some nations and even corporations adopted their own Coat of Arms.
Any given Coat of Arms has 4 parts:
- The Motto
- The Crest
- The Supporters
- The Shield Elements
The lions are seen holding what is known as the ‘Bayer cross.’ The cross is nothing but a Vertical and Horizontal representation of the company name. It got registered as a patent more than a century ago, is the symbol of the Bayer Group. It is one of the world’s best-known trademarks. There are more than 50 large illuminated advertising sites featuring the Bayer logo. So, in context with the Coat of Arms, the two Red Lions represents the Supporters. The Bayer Cross acts as a Crest. The Motto’s purpose is solved by having the name Bayer in the Crest.
1904 in the logo represents the foundation year of the Football Club. Likewise, Bayer is based in Leverkusen, a city in North Rhine-Westphalia, West Germany.
The capital club currently sit on 8th position in the Bundesliga. They are 7 points behind League leaders Borussia Monchengladbach.
