BCCI announce India squad for Under 19 World Cup

The 13th edition of the ICC Under-19 World Cup will be held in South Africa. It is scheduled from the 17th of January to 9th February 2020. 

The All-India Junior Selection Committee met on Sunday. It announced India’s 15 member squad for the World Cup. Uttar Pradesh batsman Priyam Garg will lead India in the U-19 World Cup next year. India are the defending champions. 

The right-hand batsman has a List A hundred. Also, he has a first-class double hundred to his credit. He was also a part of the India C team in the Deodhar Trophy. Garg scored 74 against India B in last month’s final. In the 2018-19 Ranji season, he amassed 814 runs as he averaged 67.83. 

Yashasvi Jaiswal is another player to watch out for. The 17-year-old became the youngest to smash a List A double-century. He achieved this feat as he represented Mumbai in the recent Vijay Hazare Trophy. While scoring three hundreds and a fifty, he averaged 112.80. 

The 2020 Under-19 World Cup will be played among 16 teams. Furthermore, the teams are divided into four groups. India is placed in Group A alongside Japan, New Zealand and Sri Lanka. They will face Sri Lanka in the campaign opener on 19 January. 

The pace department for India includes Sushant Mishra, Kartik Tyagi, Akash Singh and Vidyadhar Patil. Atharva Ankolekar, Shubhang Hegde and Ravi Bishnoi are the spinners.

Priyam Garg (c), Yashasvi Jaiswal, Tilak Varma, Divyaansh Saxena, Dhruv Chand Jurel, Shashwat Rawat, Divyansh Joshi, Shubhang Hegde, Ravi Bishnoi, Akash Singh, Kartik Tyagi, Atharva Ankolekar, Kumar Kushagra (wk), Sushant Mishra and Vidyadhar Patil. 

NCA Director Rahul Dravid said that the Indian side has a good balance. He believes that they can come good in South Africa.

India will play a three-match one-day series against South Africa U-19 before the World Cup. They will also play a quadrangular series involving South Africa, New Zealand and Zimbabwe U-19. 

India is the most successful team in the history of the U-19 World Cup. Since 1998, India has won four editions in 2000, 2008, 2012 and 2012. The latest triumph came in 2018 where the Prithvi Shaw led side defeated Australia by 8 wickets.
