Napoli appoint Former Ac Milan player and club legend Gennaro Gattuso as club manager following the sacking of former boss Carlo Ancelotti who guided the team to a runners-up finish in Serie A last season, when they missed out on the Champions League last 16 on goal difference to eventual winners Liverpool. Gattuso pens a short term deal till the end of the season.
Despite having won 4-0 against Genk last night the veteran was shown the door. This step came after Ancelotti’s relationship with club president Aurelio De Laurentiis had become strained this season amid a row between club owner Aurelio De Laurentiis and the players after a series of disappointing results. In 18 months Napoli have gone from Maurizio Sarri’s slick style of football to a team scrambling to save their season , the appointment of Gennaro Gattuso looks nothing but a formality. Napoli were seemingly quick in appointing Gattuso, who has won 40 of his 83 league and cup matches at Milan – a decent 48% win rate.
Former Napoli boss had paid a tribute to his successor in a letter last year. As a player, Gattuso played under Ancelotti where he made a reputation as a midfield hard-man who loved the dirty work, the aggressive side of football and wasn’t afraid to get hurt for the cause. This is the same attribute that Aurelio De Laurentiis will be looking for. Gattuso comes with quite a reputation as manager. As a manager of Crete he once almost walked out in an interview where he stated ,”I want my players to play with balls and heart It’s too easy for me to leave! I don’t go home and cry because we don’t have money.” After Crete Gattuso had a stint at at Serie C club Pisa , where he got them promoted. After which he was back at AC Milan as manager of the u-18 side before taking over the senior team from the ever failing manager Vincenzo Montella. Being in-charge of 18 months Gattuso drove The Rossnoneri’s to their best ever finish in 6 years, a spectacular 5th position. He left the post since he could not qualify for the Champions league.
The next challenge for Gattuso is a unique one as he needs to unite a divided squad and marshal them to a top 4 finish. The reputation of ADL, Napoli President is no stranger in the land of football , having appointed a firey head as manager its a disaster waiting to happen but what can one say about the surprises that the beautiful game throws at us. It could be an appointment that is mad enough to work.
