Gurkeerat Singh has been appointed Punjab’s vice-captain for the 2019-20 Ranji Trophy season.
He has played just 3 ODIs for India in 2016 down under. However, his India career never really got the kick as he’d have liked. But he has been doing well in the domestic circuit and also in the IPL.
Gurkeerat has played 49 first-class games so far. He has 2942 runs with six hundreds and the best score of 201* averaging 43.91. In 98 T20Is, he has 1624 runs with six fifties and a strike-rate of 125.11. With whatever opportunities given, he has shown promise in his career. He was also retained by Royal Challengers Bangalore for 2020 IPL season. Gurkeerat will hope to get more chances to display his talent.
Hopefully, I will play more matches in the next season : Gurkeerat
Gurkeerat Singh first came to light when Kings XI Punjab bought him in 2011-12. In his second game for KXIP, he scored a 12 ball 29 in a match-winning run-chase. However, after five unfruitful seasons with Punjab, Gurkeerat was bought by Delhi in 2018. He only warmed the bench with the Delhi franchise.
Royal Challengers Bangalore bought him in the 2019 auctions for INR 50 Lakhs. However, he had to wait as he was benched for the first half of the season. His opportunity came in the last few games of the league stage. In RCB’s last game against Hyderabad, he scored a match-winning 48-ball 65. Joining hands with Hetmyer in a 144 run-stand, he helped RCB sign off on a high.
This performance helped him getting retained by RCB for IPL 2020 as well. He hopes to get more chances in the middle for RCB.
“It is frustrating to warm the bench when your team is not doing well. I waited for my chance, all I could do. Hopefully, I will play more matches in the next season,” Gurkeerat was quoted as saying by The Times of India.
