Domination in Test cricket
As the later half of the decade has gone by, Indian cricket has grown into a dominant force in Test cricket. India won the ICC Test Mace in 2017 and have successfully retained it ever since. Virat Kohli and Cheteshwar Pujara have done the bulk of the run-scoring over the years. The duo of Ashwin and Jadeja dominated with the ball, especially at home. However, a key factor in India’s rise has been the emergence of improved fast bowling. The likes of Bumrah, Ishant, Shami, Bhuvneshwar and Umesh make India a threatful pace attack.
The Indian team finished the decade with a record winning streak in the format. Kohli and co. won the Test series in Australia in 2018-19. It was the first time India won a Test series down under.
India’s final Test of the decade was also a historic first. On November 22, India hosted Bangladesh for its first pink-ball Test in Kolkata. Beating the neighbours, India won its first-ever Day-Night Test. The icing on the cake was Virat Kohli scoring the first century by an Indian in pink-ball cricket.
‘Dadagiri’ returns to Indian cricket
Taking over as captain, Sourav Ganguly once led India out of its darkest phase. As the decade came to an end, Ganguly once again took over the reins. This time, however, he has come back as the BCCI president.
Ganguly took no time to make his presence felt. He organised India’s first-ever day-night Test within a month of taking office. The BCCI is already established as a powerful cricket board. Therefore, it will be interesting to see where Ganguly takes Indian cricket in the 2020s.
ICC Tournaments and lack of finishing
India had a fair share of highs. However, they also had some frustrating lows. Lack of finishing off in ICC Tournaments is something that would hurt India. Apart from the 2011 WC and 2013 CT, India has played 7 other ICC Tournaments. These include 2 World Cups and 4 World T20s. India failed to make the final in six of these, often finishing as semifinalists. They also lost the 2017 Champions Trophy final to Pakistan.
However, India did win 3 out of 5 Asia Cups in the decade. But their performance in ICC tournaments still left something to be desired.
The Indian Premier League
The IPL has grown tremendously as far as its value is concerned. It has emerged as the biggest T20 league across the globe. The decade saw Mumbai Indians dominate the IPL having won the title for a record four times. Chennai Super Kings has been the second most successful team with 3 titles to its name.
However, the IPL has also had its share of controversies. CSK and Rajasthan Royals faced 2 years suspension due to match-fixing and betting scandals.
The Indian women’s team also had a good decade. Mithali Raj led the side to the final of the 2017 Women’s World Cup. Harmanpreet Kaur and Smriti Mandhana plied their trade in the Big Bash League as well. They have left a mark by doing so. The team also finished with a 2-1 series win over West Indies. This is their 31st series victory in the 50 overs format between 2010 and 2019.
