IPL 2020: Auction Strategy – RCB

The Perennial underachievers of the IPL have finished at the bottom of the table twice in three seasons. The Bangalore based franchise will look to start afresh under the wings of Simon Katich and Mike Hesson by assembling a core set of individuals who can guide the team to greater heights.

Devdutt Padikkal’s calibre with the bat will bolster the top order :

The 19-year-old exhibited some phenomenal stroke play in the recently concluded Syed Mushtaq Ali tournament. Amidst a plethora of stars in the Karnataka roster, Devdutt reincarnated an image of his own by guiding the team to two successive silverware. The Eddapal-born batsman was the highest run-getter of two of India’s high profile domestic competitions – Vijay Hazare Trophy and Syed Mushtaq Ali tournament. Given his skill-sets with the bat and acrobatics on the field, RCB will be elated to have him on board.

Death Bowling: The Achilles Heel

RCB has always been deprived of a good death bowler in the ranks. In the upcoming auction, they will have their eyes set on a premier bowler who can deliver for them at the death over and also spearhead the bowling attack with the experienced Umesh Yadav. After an outstanding Syed Mushtaq Ali campaign, Lukman Meriwala’s name has been doing the rounds Challengers will look to acquire the services of the Baroda pacer.

Possible options: Lukman Meriwala, Pat Cummins, Sam Curran, Jhye Richardson.

Middle Order Muddle in the IPL :

The Challengers have always been a top-heavy side and very reliant on the duo Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers. There’s no doubt that the duo has performed at the toughest of situations but T20 remains to be a format where each and every individual needs to buckle up for the team to go the full distance.

After a successful summer, Eoin Morgan will be the cynosure of all eyes at the auction table. Given that he also comes up with a possible captaincy option, teams will be looking to go big on the English batsman. Avid fans of the Bangalore franchise will hope that the Englishman returns back to the fortress after a gap of over 10 years, Eoin Morgan was part of the RCB roster in 2010 edition of the IPL but didn’t quite live up to the odds.

Glenn Maxwell RCB IPL

Other than that, the name of an Australia all-rounder has been quite doing the rounds. Glenn Maxwell is expected to go big at the auction table and there will be no surprise if RCB splurge big on him. The conditions at the Chinnaswamy Stadium is tailor-made for a player of calibre like Glenn Maxwell.

Will the new Trans-Tasman chapter turn the fortunes of the side in IPL?

Earlier this year, RCB completed a major overhaul in the support staff after parting ways with Ashish Nehra and Gary Kirsten. Mike Hesson was appointed as the Director Of Cricket Operations and Simon Katich will be donning the role of the Head Coach.

Heading an IPL team isn’t new to the Trans-Tasman duo, they were associated with teams like KXIP and KKR in the previous season. Mike Hesson has been quite active on the social media platform to unravel the franchise’s progress and strategy in the build-up to the auction.

The staunch supporters of the franchise will want to see the Trans-Tasman working closely together to take the team to a commendable position and also aim for the glory.

The IPL Auction is slated to be held on the 19th December in Kolkata with as many as 73 slots to be filled.
