Earlier Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) had put all the speculations go flee on the trade of R Ashwin to Delhi Capitals (DC). KXIP co-owner Ness Wadia had confirmed that the Tamil Nadu off-spinner will not leave for elsewhere and stay with KXIP for the upcoming season. In a shocking turn of events, DC has reportedly completed the trade deal of R Ashwin.
The speculated move became more doubtful as KXIP announced the recruitment of Anil Kumble as the franchise’s director of cricket operations cum head coach. KXIP spinner R Ashwin’s kerfuffle move to DC has been finally completed and the official announcement will be made soon.
Delhi Capitals finally get the services of R Ashwin
Multiple sources confirm that R Ashwin’s trade to DC is through. We have come to an understanding that KXIP was interested in this deal only if they were to two players from DC camp. However, we still don’t know about those two players who are going to be a part of R Ashwin’s deal.
A senior BCCI official, privy to IPL trade-offs, told PTI on conditions of anonymity: “Yes, Ashwin is joining Delhi Capitals. The deal had earlier fell through as KXIP didn’t get the two DC players that they wanted in a trade-off with Ashwin. Now they are getting those two players and it’s 99 percent done,” the official said.
It is been confirmed by IANS, a source in DC franchise who is a part in the decision making has said that while the move has been completed, an announcement would be made in the near future: “Yes, it is done and we will announce soon,” the official said.
Is KL Rahul the new captain elect for KXIP?
Under Ashwin’s captaincy, KXIP played well in the first half of the past two seasons before losing steam in the second half. They finished seventh in 2018 and sixth in 2019. The move also means that KL Rahul could be handed the role of captain for the next edition.
KL Rahul will be more than happy to work Anil Kumble who can surely turn the stars for him. Anil Kumble will work on making KL Rahul a leader who might perhaps captain the national side one day. This surely is going to be a very big opportunity for the 27-year-old batsman to make his mark in terms of captaincy.
“Yes, that is very much a possibility because Rahul is not only one of the senior players, but also understands the working of the team and the strengths and weaknesses of those in the team,” said a source in the know of developments in the KXIP camp.
