Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), a team that has always lined up with a plethora of star players led by Indian skipper Virat Kohli, is one of those teams that has been shy of raising the crown of IPL. RCB has had problems with bowling in the past due to the horrifying conditions for bowlers at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium only a few have cherished.
Now we have come to the understanding that the IPL 2020 Player Auction will take place in December of this year, RCB is the latest team to replace it’s coaching staff, Mike Hesson has been designated to the role of Director-Cricket Operations, and Simon Katich replaced Gary Kirsten as head coach. It looks like RCB is already going through some process of looking at the potential of the players in the squad whether they are in the plans of the team’s future.
The interesting factor here is the recruitment process that Mike Hesson pointed out in an interview last week where he talked about the selection process by keeping an eye on a set of players based purely on their performances prior to the auction.
The major question that pops up when there are talks about the IPL auction, will Mitchell Starc play in the upcoming season of IPL? The Australian superstar is currently one of the best bowlers in the world, and given his record in the IPL, he only played for the RCB in the past, where he was an absolute lethal bowling weapon for the red & gold outfit.
Given RCB’s net RR in the death overs (15-20 overs) from the past nine seasons of IPL;
- 2011: 9.30
- 2012: 10.58
- 2013: 10.56
- 2014: 11.00
- 2015: 8.55
- 2016: 10.94
- 2017: 9.81
- 2018: 12.23
- 2019: 11.08
IPL 2015 was the best season for RCB bowlers due to the presence of the ace pacer Mitchell Starc who had been at the start of his prime form. In 2017, Starc had opted out from the IPL because he needed some time off as he returned from an injury and needed to focus on his rehabilitation ahead of the Champions Trophy.
RCB was not the only team to acquire the service of Starc, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) had bought Starc at the 2018 IPL player auction, and Starc missed the whole season for them (KKR) due to an injury. With the fact that remains the same, RCB is the only team Mitchell Starc has played for in the IPL.
Will Royal Challengers Bangalore’s (RCB) bowling woes be solved by bringing Starc?
The newly-appointed bowling coach of the RCB Adam Griffith has a soft corner for the Aussie pacer, so there is a huge possibility that Mitchell Starc might be their favourite at the IPL 2020 player auction. With Mitchell Starc on the side, the confidence of the players can be boosted and the rest of the bowlers in the squad can be helped.
