ISL 2020-21: SWOT Analysis of FC Goa

FC Goa look weak on paper after having let go their top players who helped them win the ISL Shield last season.

FC Goa vs Bengaluru FC

FC Goa, one of the most entertaining teams in the Indian Super League, are the only side who will enjoy the home support despite the absence of fans. The league will take place in Goa across three venues in a bio bubble secure environment.

FC Goa have failed to win the trophy in the past despite making it to the playoffs and finals. They were left heartbroken when Rahul Bheke of Bengaluru FC scored the 117th-minute winner in the 2018/19 finals. The team will hope to exact revenge from the opposition on Sunday when the sides meet at Fatorda in their respective first games.

Ahead of the seventh edition of the league, here is the SWOT Analysis of FC Goa.

Strengths

Though the club failed to keep hold of Ferran Coro and Ahmed Jahouh, FC Goa have signed Igo Angulo and Jorge Ortiz on a free transfer. Also, the team kept hold of their core midfielders, Lenny Rodrigues and Edu Bedia for another season.

 Weakness

After things ended on a negative note at the end of the previous season, the club sacked it manager Sergio Lobera who led the side to the playoffs. Along with him, the manager took several top players to Mumbai City FC. The club might struggle in the absence of proven players in the seventh edition of the Indian Super League.

Opportunities

Lenny Rodrigues is entering his mid-30s and has very little time to prove that he is eligible to play for the national team. He can earn a national team call-up with a set of good performances in ISL 7. Also, Redeem Tlang will look to put the shifts on the field after an excellent performance in 2019/20 season.

Threats

The team has no reliable back-up goalkeeper at their disposal. An injury to Mohammad Nawaz can prove to be a costly one. The manager is also quite inexperienced compared to others in the league.
