Messi wins the Ballon d’Or for the sixth time

And again he conquered the stage and again he becomes the best. After having his sixth Ballon d’Or, Lionel Messi said he’s far from finished. As he said that he hopes to continue for a long time. It was a magical night at Paris for him and all his followers around the globe.

Like his characteristics, he
seemed shy to express his delights and said that he does realize that he is very lucky, even if, one day, retirement will come for him also. It will be difficult for him but Messi is optimistic that he still has a lot of good years ahead of me.Time goes by very quickly, so Messi wants to enjoy football and his family.

While the 32-year-old Argentine forward won his sixth Ballon d’Or, United States captain Megan Rapinoe won her first. Rapinoe expressed her delight in a recorded video message during the ceremony as she was unable to be present. The ‘Theatre du Chatelet’ was lavish and every inch of it filled with appreciation and respect when he lifted the golden ball for the 6th time. Messi has been awarded the Ballon d’Or previously in 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, and 2015. Liverpool defender Virgil van
Dijk was second in the polling this year, followed by the Portuguese Cristiano Ronaldo.

Messi back on top

Messi and Ronaldo together have 10-year grip on the award organized by France Football magazine. The stream was ended last year by Luka Modric. However Messi is now back on top with his 6th one. The forward scored 36 times last season en route to his 10th Spanish Liga scoring title, and was the Champions League top scorer also. His goals in La Liga also made him the top scorer in Europe’s biggest leagues, earning him the Golden Shoe award. A few years ago, Messi received his first Ballon d’Or here in Paris and he repeated again for his 6th last night. He got his first one when he was 22 and now he is 32. Messi also won his sixth FIFA award back in September. The only close competitor was Liverpool’s Van Dijk.

The Dutch defender missed the chance to become the first defender to win the Ballon d’or since Italy’s World Cup-winning captain, Fabio Cannavaro, who won it in 2006. Van Dijk won the 2019 Champions League crown with the Reds after ruling out Messi’s Barcelona in the semifinals. According the the defender it has been an amazing year for him and he is proud of him. Dijk was among the other seven Liverpool players nominated.

Megan Rapinoe wins Women’s Ballon d’Or

Megan Rapinoe won the women’s Ballon d’Or for leading the United States to World Cup glory in July. The 34-years-old scored six goals in the championship and earned her the Golden Boot as the top scorer and the Golden Ball as the top player. Hegerberg was fourth this time, who won it last time. Lucy Bronze of England was second, and Alex Morgan gained third place. Juventus and ex Ajax defender Matthijs De Light won the Kopa Trophy for the best under-21 player. The inaugural Yashin Trophy was given to the year’s best men’s goalkeeper and it went to Liverpool’s Alisson.
