NBA 2019-20 Season Preview Part V

The fifth part of the ongoing NBA season preview

This is the fifth part of the ongoing NBA season preview series.  Each part is going to deal with one division. The roster changes of each team, the expectations coming into this season, what they might perform like, how season will end, their final win total at the end of regular season will be discussed. How the season ends, and their final win total are this author’s assumptions based on previous season, roster changes and injuries going into this season. In season injuries based on the player will dramatically affect and alter the prediction of a team.

The Southwest Division is the next division up for preview, consisting of the Houston Rockets, the San Antonio Spurs, the Memphis Grizzlies, the New Orleans Pelicans and the Dallas Mavericks.

Houston Rockets

  • Roster changes:
    • In:
      • Rookies: Shamorie Ponds.
      • Trades/Free Agent Acquisitions: Ryan Anderson, Tyson Chandler, Ben McLemore, Thabo Sefolosha, Ray Spalding, Russell Westbrook.
    • Out:
      • Chris Chiozza, Trevon Duval, Vincent Edwards, Kenneth Faried, Michael Frazier, Chris Paul, Iman Shumpert
    • Same as previous season:
      • Clint Capela, Eric Gordon, Gerald Green, James Harden, Isaiah Hartenstein, Nene Hilario, Danuel House, Austin Rivers, P.J. Tucker, Gary Clark.
  • Expectations coming into this season:
    • This was yet another offseason of wheeling and dealing by GM Daryl Morey. Adding Russell Westbrook, a ball dominant hybrid point guard to a ball dominant hybrid shooting guard in James Harden feels more like a freaky friday experiment than an actual team built to win a championship.
  • Expected performance this season:
    • The talent alone should help them make it to the playoffs. How much does Russell bury his ego and take the no 2 spot on this team is what will help this team from combustion.
  • Where they’ll end the season:
    • Second half of the playoff spots and a First Round Playoff exit.
  • Expected win total this season:
    • 50-32

San Antonio Spurs

  • Roster changes:
    • In:
      • Rookies: Luka Samanic, Quinndary Weatherspoon, Keldon Johnson.
      • Trades/Free Agent Acquisitions: DeMarre Carroll, Trey Lyles.
    • Out:
      • Davis Bertans, Dante Cunningham, Ben Moore, Donatas Motiejunas, Quincy Pondexter.
    • Same as previous season:
      • LaMarcus Aldridge, Marco Belinelli, DeMar DeRozan, Bryn Forbes, Rudy Gay, Chimezie Metu, Patrick Mills, Dejounte Murray, Jakob Pöltl, Lonnie Walker, Derrick White, Drew Eubanks.
  • Expectations coming into this season:
    • The Spurs have made playoff for 22 consecutive seasons. Greg Popovich has taken every which version of Spurs team to the playoffs over the last 22 seasons. This team still has talent with LaMarcus Aldridge and Demar DeRozan.
  • Expected performance this season:
    • It will take a braver man than me to bet against a Greg Popovich team from making the playoffs.
  • Where they’ll end the season:
    • One of the final playoff spots and a First Round Playoff exit.
  • Expected win total this season:
    • 47-35

Memphis Grizzlies

  • Roster changes:
    • In:
      • Rookies: Brandon Clarke, Marko Guduric, John Konchar, Ja Morant.
      • Trades/Free Agent Acquisitions: Grayson Allen, Jae Crowder, Solomon Hill, Andre Iguodala, Josh Jackson, Tyus Jones, De’Anthony Melton, Miles Plumlee.
    • Out:
      • Avery Bradley, Jevon Carter, Mike Conley, Tyler Dorsey, Justin Holiday, C.J. Miles, Joakim Noah, Chandler Parsons, Julian Washburn, Delon Wright, Tyler Zeller.
    • Same as previous season:
      • Kyle Anderson, Dillon Brooks, Jaren Jackson Jr., Jonas Valanciunas, Bruno Caboclo, Ivan Rabb, Yuta Watanabe.
  • Expectations coming into this season:
    • This is a rebuilding season for the grind house. While they got the second best player in the draft this offseason, their only focus this season will be the development of Ja Morant.
  • Expected performance this season:
    • Finishing near the bottom of the table.
  • Where they’ll end the season:
    • Finishing near the bottom
  • Expected win total this season:
    • 20-62

New Orleans Pelicans

  • Roster changes:
    • In:
      • Rookies: Zion Williamson, Nicolo Melli, Jaxson Hayes, Zylan Cheatham, Nickeil Alexander-Walker.
      • Trades/Free Agent Acquisitions: Lonzo Ball, Derrick Favors, Josh Gray, Josh Hart, Brandon Ingram, J.J. Redick.
    • Out:
      • Dairis Bertans, Trevon Bluiett, Ian Clark, Anthony Davis, Cheick Diallo, Solomon Hill, Stanley Johnson, Elfrid Payton, Julius Randle, Christian Wood.
    • Same as previous season:
      • Jrue Holiday, Frank Jackson, Darius Miller, E’Twaun Moore, Jahlil Okafor, Kenrich Williams.
  • Expectations coming into this season:
    • While losing Anthony Davis is sure going to hurt some part of the fan base, winning the Zion Williamson sweepstakes is sure to make the pain of that a lot more manageable. This will be a fun team to watch to grow into their own.
  • Expected performance this season corner:
    • With Zion Williamson’s injury at the end of pre-season, and him missing a minimum of 3 weeks, any faint hopes of making the playoffs have been dashed.
  • Where they’ll end the season:
    • Outside the playoff spots.
  • Expected win total this season:
    • 20-62

Dallas Mavericks

  • Roster changes:
    • In:
      • Rookies: Josh Reaves, Isaiah Roby.
      • Trades/Free Agent Acquisitions: Antonius Cleveland, Seth Curry, Boban Marjanovic, Delon Wright.
    • Out:
      • Kostas Antetokounmpo, Trey Burke, Devin Harris, Daryl Macon, Salah Mejri, Dirk Nowitzki.
    • Same as previous season:
      • José Juan Barea, Ryan Broekhoff, Jalen Brunson, Luka Doncic, Dorian Finney-Smith, Tim Hardaway Jr., Justin Jackson, Maxi Kleber, Courtney Lee, Kristaps Porzingis, Dwight Powell.
  • Expectations coming into this season:
    • Big things are expected of this team this season with reigning Rookie of the Year Luka Donacic and Porzingis finally returning from his injury. They are sure to give a serious playoff run granted there are no serious injuries to any of their starters.
  • Expected performance this season corner:
    • It might be a season too soon for them to make the playoffs.
  • Where they’ll end the season:
    • Just outside the playoff spots.
  • Expected win total this season:
    • 40-42
