New Zealand is set to face a tough opposition as they host India. The T20I series will mark the beginning of the tour as the sides face off on Friday for the 1st T20I. As per selector Gavin Larsen, the India series will be “huge” for New Zealand. They have a few things to work out through this series. The first of these is a best XI with several of their players injured.
Firstly, they will take in confidence as they had beaten India 2-1 in the T20Is last year. Secondly, New Zealand will have a similar bowling attack lined up for this series. The names being Hamish Bennett, Tim Southee, Blair Tickner and Scott Kuggeleijn in the pace attack. Mitchell Santner and Ish Sodhi make up the spin department.
The major blow for New Zealand, however, is that Trent Boult, Lockie Ferguson and Matt Henry are all injured. Santner’s form will also be another worry for them. He picked only one wicket in four Test innings in Australia. A different format, however, could help his cause.
The responsibility lies more on the experienced batting department. Kane Willamson is back after missing the England T20Is. He will join Martin Guptill, Ross Taylor and Colin Munro as they form the top and middle order.
For both the teams, this series will be their first major one of the year. The T20 World Cup later this year makes it more significant.
India to face New Zealand high on confidence
On the other hand, India also have few players injured. These include Shikhar Dhawan, Hardik Pandya, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Deepak Chahar. However, India does have strong bench strength. The confidence will be high as India beat Sri Lanka 2-0 in the T20Is. They also came back strong to win the ODI series (2-1) against Australia. Four pacers, two spinners and three all-rounders to choose from makes it a settled bowling line-up. Sanju Samson has replaced Dhawan in the 16-man squad. Therefore, it will be interesting to see whether he and Pandey get a chance. This happens if Rishabh Pant plays as wicketkeeper and Rahul as a pure batsman.
