Former Indian cricketer Gautam Gambhir says credit of Rohit Sharma’s success goes to Dhoni. He believes Sharma’s rise in cricket is just because of Dhoni.
“Where Rohit Sharma is today, it is because of M.S. Dhoni,” Gambhir told Sports Talk as per India Today.
Rohit Sharma started his career in 2007 against Ireland in an ODI. He made his Test debut in 2013 against the West Indies. After his debut, Rohit was languishing in the middle-order with consistency being his main issue. Due to this problem, Dhoni supported him and promoted him as an opener in 2013. This move worked well and he became a lethal batsman in white-ball cricket. He has scored 3 double hundreds and in January 2020, Sharma was named as the ODI Cricketer of the Year by the International Cricket Council.
Gambhir thinks that Dhoni as a captain backed Rohit Sharma a lot.
“You can talk about the selection committee and team management, but if you do not have the backing from your captain then it is all useless. Everything is in the hands of the captain,” Gambhir said.
“How Dhoni backed Rohit Sharma over a period of time, I don’t think any other player has been given such support,” he added.
On this birthday of Rohit Sharma, Gambhir characterized him as the best white-ball cricketer in the world; “Happy Birthday to the best white-ball cricketer in the world Rohit Sharma! Have a great year ahead!!”
“Don’t know about that Gauti Bhai. But loving your work, ” Rohit replied.
